I think Matthew perry bullied the Japanese by dropping of 26 anchors of the coast of edo Tokyo the capital of the country,it also states that perry wanted to intimidate the Japanese so he brought ships to the port where the Japanese were located.but on march 31 the treaty was signed by japan to open two ports for the U.S.
The thing that i think the japaneses was so imprssed by was that matthew perry brought a naval force to make the japanese sign the treaty.the japanese observed European countries and the way they were run. Japan sent many people to the West to study the way countries were run. For example, Japanese men studied the German Constitution.
